Principal, Phil Schappert, has a PhD in Biology with specialization in Botany, Entomology, Ecology and Phytochemistry and has taught undergraduate courses and supervised theses in these subjects at the University of Texas at Austin and Dalhousie University in Halifax. An itinerant and self-described "natural historian" his wide-ranging interests include nature photography, behaviour watching and conservation of natural communities.

"I have worked with reintroduction of Karner Blue, and population surveys of West Virginia White, butterflies in Ontario.

While managing a Biological Field Station in Texas, I also worked with population and life history monitoring of endangered Houston Toads and Navasota Ladies'- Tresses orchids."
